A maid of honour speech that sounds like the two of you

Will you cry before the first line? Maybe. That's allowed.

You've spent months as her planner, sounding board and emergency contact. Now you have a few minutes to say what she means to you, in front of her family and her new in-laws.

The maid of honour speech isn't part of every wedding, so there's less of a script to follow. Treat that as freedom. The room wants a friendship: how it started, what it survived, and why you're glad about the person beside her today.

What to cover

  • How you met, and when you knew this friendship would last
  • A story that shows who she is when nobody's watching
  • What you noticed when she met her partner
  • A few words spoken straight to the partner
  • The toast, or a handover to the next speaker

How long

4 to 6 minutes, about 500 to 800 words. That's long enough for one proper story and a real tribute, and short enough that any tears stay the good kind.

A sample opening

"Hi everyone, I'm Aoife. Niamh and I met on the first day of secondary school, when she lent me a pen and then asked for it back in fourth year. She has been keeping track of things for me ever since, including, I suspect, exactly how long this speech runs."

Three tips

  1. Tell one story properly, with a beginning, a middle and a line that lands, rather than ten half memories.

  2. Write for her aunts as well as the group chat. If a reference needs a screenshot to explain it, keep it for the photo album.

  3. If you know you'll cry, plan for it: a pause after the emotional line, and a sip of water before the toast.

Common mistakes

  • Drifting into your own life: the breakup she got you through, your own wedding plans.
  • Hen party stories that the grandparents are hearing for the first time.
  • Leaving the partner as a name in the final sentence.

Where Toast fits

Story Harvest helps when the friendship has chapters you missed. Send the link to her college flatmates, and their voice notes arrive in your inbox with a transcript. The Wedding party room lets you and the best man agree the order and spot, in private, a story you were both planning to tell.

FAQ

Does the maid of honour speak before or after the best man?

There's no fixed rule. It's the couple's call, so ask them early and agree the order with the best man.

You know her better than anyone at the top table. Let's get it on paper.
